n. The act of one who or that which rises.n. Specifically— The appearance of the sun or a star above the horizon. In astronomy the sun or a planet is said to rise when the upper limb appears in the horizon; and in calculating the time allowance must be made for refraction, parallax, and the dip of the horizon. Primitive astronomers defined the seasons by means of the risings and settings of certain stars relatively to the sun. These, called by Kepler “poetical risings and settings,” are the acronychal, cosmical, and heliacal (see these words).n. The act of arising from the dead, or of coming to life again; resurrection.n.
